Is health promotion/disease prevention studies a difficult major to graduate from?
Q. I'm trying to decide on my undergraduate major...(I'm going pre-med)
Asked by starlight43 - Sat Nov 10 21:41:33 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most pre-med students try biology or chemistry. Health promotion/ disease prevention sounds more like you are headed for a Masters in Public Health, not Medical Doctor. Pitch the idea to the Med schools you are interested in and see what type of feedback you get. Unless you want to take you MD and go into public health??

Should schools teach abstinence only OR abstinence & birth control/disease prevention?
Q. I'm a parent and I'm a Christian. I'm going to teach my daughter abstinence AND I'm going to tell her that IF she chooses to have sex before she gets married she needs to protect herself from diseases and she needs to prevent pregnancy. This way she knows what is right even if she decides for herself to do what is wrong. Realistically I cannot live her life for her. She will always know that God (and mommy) says NO to sex before marriage.
Asked by SisterSuccess - Sun Jun 14 12:04:38 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Although I agree with religious conservatives who want to challenge the youth to delay sexual activity for a while, I totally disagree with their message that a condom is a provision for sin. I send my Christian friends to the website below which debunks the whole thing against premarital sex in the Bible. That way they have no excuse not to support comprehensive sex education.

Explain the role of vaccines in the prevention of disease?
Q. A description of the contents of a vaccine. A description of how a vaccine protects the body from disease. One specific reason certain vaccinations are required for students to attend public schools.
Asked by sara - Sun Feb 17 23:39:46 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are 4 main types of vaccines, and they each contain something different: A live attenuated vaccine has viruses or bacteria that have been modified so as to not be able to cause disease. A killed vaccine has killed/inactivated bacteria or viruses. A toxoid vaccine will contain modified toxins produced by the organism in question that have been rendered harmless. And a component vaccine will contain parts of bacteria or viruses. The vaccine protects the body from disease by evoking an immune response to the germ in question - it can induce neutralizing antibodies and protective T cells for example. This way, if you are ever exposed to that pathogen, your body will already have a sufficient amount of antibodies that already… [cont.]

Asked by mickey8609 - Wed Nov 5 23:14:57 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The more common term for it is COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). It includes the diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. These are usually caused from smoking, 2nd hand smoking, genetics or exposure to certain chemicals. Prevention is not smoking, staying away from people who smoke and wearing a mask around dangerous chemicals. Treatment may or may not include the following... nebulizers which are usually rescue meds and preventative meds, O2, and sometimes diet. Adequate management of this disease can allow the individual to lead a long healthy life.

A. Well, the first thing is eating a well balanced diet. Then you need to start to motivate yourself into some sort of physical activity... Walking is a good start, swimming is an outstanding physical activity. With the well balanced diet, and the physical activity, you will see an improvement in the way you feel. I really implore anyone who wants to lose weight, or make an improvement in your well being to shy away from any type of Carb depleting diet. Such as the adkins.. What these do is where you may lose weight, you are doing more harm than good. In order to do it properly, you have to include the entire spectrum of a balanced diet. when you slack on carbs during a physical training program you aren't providing your mucsles the… [cont.]
