A dietitian or dietician (dietitian is the official spelling used within the dietetics profession) is an expert in food and nutrition. Dietitians help promote good health through proper eating. They supervise the preparation and service of food, develop modified diets, participate in research, and educate individuals and groups on good nutritional habits. In a medical setting, a dietitian may provide specific artificial nutritional needs to patients unable to consume food normally. Dietary modification to address medical issues involving dietary intake is also a major part of dietetics. The goals of the dietary department are to provide medical nutritional intervention, obtain, prepare, and serve flavorsome, attractive, and nutritious food to patients, family members, and health care providers. In many countries only people who have specified educational credentials can call themselves "dietitians" — the title is legally protected. The term "nutritionist" is also widely used; however, the term nutritionist is not regulated as dietitian is. People may call themselves nutritionists without the educational and professional requirements of registered dietitians. Different professional terms are used in different countries. Dietitians are a valuable member of the medical multi-disciplinary team providing nutritional knowledge and acting as consultants to other health care professionals. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Can a registered nurse become a dietitian at the same time? Q. I'm a registered nurse and I want to specialize on diets so I can put up my own diet clinic, offer consultations, sell diet products, and so on. I was just wondering if this is possible for a nurse to have a license as a dietitian at the same time. If this is possible, do I still need to pursue further formal studies to acquire a license? thanks. Asked by Robby - Sun Apr 26 02:19:40 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'd check into the requirements in your state. Being an RN is not going to qualify you, in and of itself. Here are New Hampshire's requirements, as a "for instance"-- Initial License Requirements: * Submit a dietitian's license application & pay the required license fee; * Hold a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the US and complete a major course of study in human nutrition, nutrition education, food and nutrition, dietetics, public health nutrition, or food systems management; * Successfully complete a dietetic internship of no less than 900 hours, pre-professional practice program, or coordinated program with documented experience in the practice of dietetics under… [cont.] Answered by Ellie - Sun Apr 26 02:32:18 2009 What do I need to study to become a dietitian? Q. I am only 16 but i still need to be thinking about my future and career, etc etc with the HSC exam coming up for me next year as well. I am really interested in nutrition, fitness and overall health and wellbeing and my dream job would be a dietitian. How hard is it and what subjects must i study/undertake and be good at? thanks Asked by energydancer1 - Sun Nov 1 19:02:55 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. well i was interested in that course too. (just finished hsc) its a 4 year uni course - i think its a bachelor of science. the course then has different electives in it like nutrition, health etc. as for your school subjects... i would say just dont drop maths... i did food tech and should have probably done PE too... but i think youu can get into the course no matter what subjects youve done just as long as you have a decent UAl... or ATAR or watever they call it now. i think if you have a guenuine interest in the subject you will be naturally "good" at it anyway. all the best :) Answered by * [: Beginners Luck :] * - Sun Nov 1 19:19:41 2009 Do you think being a Dietitian is a good job?
